The year of 2008 is getting closer and closer to us. We need to take actions from now on to prepare for the game. What we need to do most is to work on our disadvantages and shortcomings. As a student of Senior high， I can do my own part. Although I can't transform our city into more a beautiful place on my own， I can help Beijing in small ways and encourage our classmates and people around me to follow my lead.
Let me take the environment for example， the atmosphere around Beijing is quite disappointing， factories and cars keep giving off exhausts into the air， we can hardly see the blue sky with our naked eyes， because the sky is covered with a thick layer of harmful substances. The sky is gray instead of blue. To our delight， the government has passed some laws of protecting the air， and we can do something useful， too. For example， whenever we go out for a long distance， ride the bike or take the buses and subways instead of taxis. You may not have a clue how it works. Of course doing that only by one person is far from enough， but we can let more people do that together. In that case the result may be more than we bargained for.
Another thing we need to work on is our English skills. Teachers and parents often put great emphasis on our English skills especially listening and speaking. I want to be a volunteer in 2008， to be an interpreter. For now， I must do something helpful to improve my spoken English. Rome isn't build in a day， so is English. It can’t be improved in a day or two. It takes time and energy. There are no shortcuts to improve your spoken English； the most productive way is to grab all opportunities around you to open your mouth. For instance， taking part in all kinds of English contests is a good way， you can meet some excellent contestants， and you can share the experience of learning and some good method of learning. I will keep participating in all English activities to polish up my English. I'm sure by the year of 2008， I will be able to master English well just as my mother tongue.
All in all， I'm sure that Beijing Olympic Games will be one of the most successful Games in history. I believe our long-cherished dream will be fulfilled in a perfect way！

Studying Abroad
In recent years， studying abroad has been popular. More and more students leave their own country to go abroad for their further education. They say that they can develop better with advanced facilities and teaching methods in those modern schools. By communicating with foreign students or staying a long time with them， a profitable experience is available to them. By the time they come back home， they are supposed to have a great advantage over the students at home in many ways. I quite agree with what they say. But one fact I'd like to remind them of is that quite a number of overseas students stay abroad disappointed as they can’t obtain what they hope for， let alone success. When they are abroad， they are helpless and have to be independent， which is quite contrary to what it is at home. They lack independence； they can't even tell right and wrong apart， and as a result some of them even commit crimes. Therefore， whether it is good or not to study abroad depends on the individual. So take more factors into careful consideration.

Almost everyone knows the famous Chinese saying： A young idler， an old beggar. Throughout history， we have seen many cases in which this saying has again and again proved to be true.
It goes without saying that the youth is the best time of life， during which one's mental and physical states are at their peaks. It takes relatively less time and pains to learn or accept new things in a world full of changes and rapid developments. In addition， one is less likely to be under great pressure from career， family and health problems when young. Therefore， a fresh mind plus enormous energy will ensure success in different aspects of life.
Of course， we all know： no pains， no gains. If we don't make every effort to make good use of the advantages youth brings us， it is impossible to achieve any goals. As students， we should now try our best to learn all the subjects well so that we can be well prepared for the challenges that we will face in the future.

With the development of economics as well as the improving life standard， more and more people possess private cars.
As each coin has two sides， there are also disadvantages in such a trend. First of all， the air and noise pollution is undoubtedly going from bad to worse. The poisonous gas the private cars send out is not only of great harm to the environment around us， but to our human bodies as well， especially to the respiratory systems. Private cars， of their owners most are new drivers， meanwhile， are consequently easy to result in traffic jams or even accidents. You can imagine how worrying the situation can be when you are in a hurry！
Such being the case， some immediate measures must be taken to prevent it in my opinion. For instance， we should pay more attention to the environmental protection to refresh the air， if possible， to reduce the noise level. It is expected that more advanced technology can make it a reality to replace the poisonous gas with one which both saves energy and causes no harm， thus making our daily life more satisfying！

Nowadays， there appears a phenomenon that the western customs are spreading into the east countries step by step， thus making many inhabitants who live in big cities enjoy themselves on these western festivals such as Christmas Day， April Fool's Day， etc. Such phenomenon shows us that the world people are getting close gradually and the world is becoming smaller and smaller as well. Therefore， in my opinion， it's a normal phenomenon s well as a necessary trend.
First of all， it shows that we Chinese have become much opener rather than clinging to some very old customs， which are opposite our living. Looking back on the history， we can find the answer to why our China was very poor and weak in the 1800's. Yes， the answer is that we closed ourselves not to let other countries know about us， and this led us to a very hard road on which we suffered many wars that many European countries launched. So I think it is more than necessary to accept other customs instead of closing ourselves. Of course， festivals are just the beginning.
What's more， the Open and Reform Policy results in this. So I want to say it is a great achievement for the policy. Since we took the policy into practice， our country is developing with a rapid speed. No doubt it is an essential trend.
Last but not the least， we may get closer and closer not only to our home friends but also to many foreigners. We can never feel embarrassed for not knowing the other's customs and manners. And more misunderstandings can be avoided as well.
To sum up， the trend has its great advantage to a certain extent. However， if we admire the western customs too much， it will be a disadvantage because China is our own country， all of us should enjoy a patriotic heart. Wish in the near future， we can see the situation that westerners are enjoying themselves on the Spring Festival.

If we lose heart and give up halfway， nothing can be achieved. Throughout history， we have had many famous successful people in the world， of whom no one is weak-minded. And still， I hold that one must keep in pace with the informative world. There’s no denying that our world is changing every day. So one can never be locked alone inside his own room， doing his research work and dedicated to book knowledge. How can an isolated person be well-informed enough to go ahead of others？ If so， that could be ridiculous.

Students long to attend colleges or universities for various reasons. In my opinion， the most common reasons are to prepare for a career， to have new experiences and learn to be independent.
Career preparation is becoming more and more important to young people. For many， this is the primary reason to go to college. They know that the job market is competitive and in order to be employed in the future they have to be well equipped with knowledge and skills.
Also， students go to colleges or universities to have experiences and learn to live on their own. Going to colleges often means having the opportunity to meet with different people from different parts of the country. They learn to communicate and co-operate with each other. For most students， we guess， it is the first time that they have been away from home. They are faced with many new situations and have to learn to solve them independently， making decisions on their own and dealing with various things themselves. So colleges and universities help them grow up.
Surely， colleges and universities become their first choice.
