at-同ad-=去；-tempt，同tend，傾向。鼻音m,n為音變，所以m=n。連起來就是去……的傾向，我們應該能理解嘗試這個動作中確實包含了做某種事情的一種傾向性。你具有了某種傾向（tend），再順著這種傾向去嘗試(attempt)，如果失敗了，再切換為另外一種傾向（tend），然后再嘗試(attempt)。
